“Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.”

Alexander Lawrence Hicks, affectionately known as Brother or Al, departed this life on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, in Lebanon, Virginia.

Born on July 25, 1945, to the late Earnest and Malissa Alexander Hicks, Al was a native of Lebanon, Virginia. He graduated from Arty Lee High School. In 1963 Arty Lee High started their football program, Al playing tight end caught the football and made the school’s first touchdown. He continued his education at Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Following his honorable discharge, he pursued technical training in computer programming, specializing in COBOL and FORTRAN. His expertise and high level government clearance led him to programming work that supported the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He later continued his professional career with Arlington County Government, from which he retired.

Upon returning to Lebanon, Al rejoined Lebanon Chapel AME Zion Church, where he faithfully served on both the Steward Board and the Trustee Board, continuing his lifelong commitment to service and faith. Al followed the tradition of most Hicks family men and considered himself Novice Chef. He had a special skill of adding ingredients to enhance the flavor of food.

In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his sisters, Hazel S. Hicks and Ernestine C. Hicks; his grandparents, Sam and Sarah Alexander and Scott and Larance Hicks; and a host of aunts and uncles.

Wilson of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, a special friend, Rita Harmon of Richlands, Virginia, a host of loving cousins, extended family members, and friends.

Al will be remembered for his dedication to service, his gentle spirit, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew and loved him.
