Gary Edwin Holliday of Lebanon, VA, affectionately known by his truck driver handle “Hollywood,” took his final road trip around 6:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon, July 28, 2025, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was predeceased in death by his Mother Catherine McCann Holliday and Father Harry Edwin Holliday. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Tony Holliday and his sister Kay Sheets.
He was survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Barbara Holliday, his children Prudence Holliday Dillon and James Holliday, his son-in-law Brian Dillon, his daughter in law Sarah Holliday and the grandchildren he adored—Walker, Audrey, Carter, Chloee, Hunter, and Charlie. He is also survived by his brothers Tom and Bill, as well as his sisters Micki, Sandy, and “Babe” of Damascus, and several nephews, nieces, and extended family. He was 77 years old, but he’d tell you he was “just getting warmed up.”
Born on June 1, 1948, and raised in Damascus, Virginia, Gary eventually parked his life in Lebanon, Virginia, where he built a legacy of love, laughter, and community. A proud veteran, diehard Virginia Tech Hokies and Pioneer fan, and active member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Gary anchored the choir, singing bass in the hymns. He was also the longtime operator of The Breadbox, the local food bank that served those in need.
Gary was a self-educated man with a sharp and open mind and a deep curiosity about the world. He loved to read, explore ideas, and share stories, often captivating listeners with his insights. His tastes spanned from the thoughtful storytelling of Garrison Keillor to the sharp-edged humor of comedians like Richard Pryor. He was also a devoted admirer of Willie Nelson’s music and spirit, as well as a lifelong lover of soul music.
If you knew Gary, you know he never met a stranger. Within five minutes, he’d know your whole life story, make you laugh, and probably offer to buy you a McDonald’s coffee with three creams. He loved fishing, watching NASCAR on Sundays, sports games, tinkering with his own DIY inventions, and eating at Pat’s with family and friends. A true sweet tooth, Gary always had a favorite treat nearby to satisfy his cravings. Though retired from truck driving, it remained a passion and an important part of his life. At home, you could often find him watching Columbo or The Andy Griffith Show or planning the next family gathering.
Gary will be remembered not just for his dedication as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend, but for the way he made people feel—welcomed, loved, and part of the family. His humor, generosity, and big heart touched more lives than we’ll ever know.
A service celebrating Gary’s life will be held Thursday July 31st, 2025 at 7:00pm at Lebanon Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Tom Quickel officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm prior to the funeral service. Committal service will be held Friday August 1st at 11:00am in the Ketran Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
