Martha June Mutter

June 5, 1933 — January 6, 2023

Cedar Bluff, VA –Martha June Mutter, age 89, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 6, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Peery and Catherine Yates. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She loved to garden, quilt and cook. She was of the Christian faith. She loved to spend time with her family and enjoyed journaling. She wrote in her journal so her family could read of what a wonderful life she had. “I would like to be remembered for being a kind person to all I see and I have always loved my Lord.”

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: George Thomas Mutter, Jr.; sisters: Nicey Rife, Oma Coleman, Alta Jane Yates, Dorthenia O’Quinn, Bessie Jerlene Yates, Dolly Dale; brothers: Marcus Yates, Elmer Yates, James Yates, and Clyde Boyd.

Survivors include her children: Deborah Howington and husband Marty, Carter Mutter and wife Suzette, Cheryl Godbey and husband Danny, Tammy Slate and husband Jerry; grandchildren: Melissa McNulty and husband Makenzie, Thomas Howington, Raysha Fields and husband Kevin, Kanzas Hicks and husband Gabe, David  Godbey and wife Sybil, Hailey Newell and husband Brian, Kristen Gilbert and husband Ethan, and Jared Slate; great-grandchildren: Shaynah McNulty, Tyler McNulty, Zach Fields, Levi Howington, Brenton Howington, Wade Fields, Emma Newell, Stone Howington, Adalynn Fields, Aiden Newell, and expected great grandson Oliver Godbey; along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at Combs-Hess Funeral Service with Pastor Vonley Pruitt officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2023 in the Combs-Hess Funeral Service Chapel. A private burial will follow the funeral service in the Mutter Family Cemetery.

Special thanks to physicians and nurses at Russell County Hospital and Caris Hospice.

Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas Howington, David Godbey, Kevin Fields, Ethan Gilbert, Brian Newell, Jared Slate, and Larry Howington.

Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandsons and Wayne Dale.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners.
