Myrtle Hackney

  Cleveland VA,-Mrs. Myrtle Hackney passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family and friends April 26th, 2024, at the age of 94. Born April 6th, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Tavis and Bertha LaForce. She graduated from Cleveland High School and soon married the love of her life. They were married for 70 years and were life-long members of the Carbo community. She was a born-again Christian and a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She owned and operated Hackney Restaurant/Grocery in Carbo, VA from 1957-1985 where the locals would gather every evening on the store’s porch to tell tall tales and fellowship for hours. She was so kind and truly loved every person she met. She was the heart of Carbo and made sure everyone who came into her home was well fed and left with a gift. To her sons, she noted a special chapter in her worn Bible; Proverbs, Chapter 3.

Her favorite past-times besides cooking were reading her Bible, gardening, going to yard sales, and sitting on her porch enjoying the fresh air with her family and friends. She loved her little family with all of her heart, and we all knew it because she told and showed us daily.

  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Woody Hackney, as well as

brothers Mack LaForce and Rob LaForce. 

  She is survived by her loving family, sons: Mark (Jackie) and Rick (April) Hackney; grandchildren: Jason (Sarah) Hackney, Martha (Christopher) Conley, Avery Hackney, and Katie Hackney; great-grandchildren: Sully Conley, Wren Conley and Abe Hackney; sisters: Betty Collins and Ann (Ed) Wright; special friends; Marvin and Sandy Amos and Lee and Donna Barkley; special caregivers; Ginger Carter, Kimberly Puckett, Leanna Price and Becky Chafin.

  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, April 27th 2024 in the Combs-Hess Funeral Service Chapel. Funeral services will follow visitation with Pastor Travis Price and Darrell Harmon officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2p.m. on Sunday, April 28 th 2024 at Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon, VA. Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Rick Hackney; Mark Hackney; Jason Hackney; Avery Hackney; Gary Campbell and Marvin Amos.
